Time to Break a 20-Year-Old Habit
Write "best running shoes" 15 times in one article. It used to work on Google. AI laughs at this game.
I'm serious: Are you still doing SEO by calculating keyword density, setting a "focus keyword," and sprinkling it throughout your text?
If so, you're falling behind in the GEO era.
SEO optimizes keywords. GEO optimizes meaning. That's the difference.
AI Doesn't Search for "Keywords"
Google's old algorithm worked like this: "This page mentions 'best running shoes' 15 times, so it must be about best running shoes."
AI doesn't work this way. AI does this: "I read this page. Does this person actually know about running shoes? Is their information accurate? Do other sources say the same thing?"
Not keyword repetition — quality of meaning.
SEO vs GEO: Where's the Difference?
| Criteria | SEO (Old Approach) | GEO (New Approach) |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Keyword density | Meaning and context |
| Goal | Google ranking | Inclusion in AI recommendations |
| Content type | "Top 10 Best..." lists | Content that genuinely answers the question |
| Trust | Backlink count | Third-party signals + transparency |
| Format | Long text | Structured, quotable blocks |
What Does AI-Friendly Content Look Like?
Let me give you an example. Someone asks ChatGPT: "What's the best CRM for small businesses?"
❌ SEO Content (Old Style):
"The best CRM program for small businesses looking for the best CRM solutions... Among the best CRM programs, X stands out... By using the best CRM for your business..."
Full of keywords but says nothing.
✅ GEO Content (New Style):
"If you're a 3-person team with a budget under $50/month, consider HubSpot Free or Zoho CRM. HubSpot's advantage is easy setup; its weakness is limited advanced reporting. If you're 10+ people, Pipedrive is a solid middle ground."
Specific, honest, comparative. AI quotes exactly this.
The Critical Difference
SEO content dances around the question. GEO content actually answers it. AI finds genuine answers and presents them to users. It skips indirect responses.
How to Change Your Content Strategy for GEO
1. Match Questions to Answers
What do your customers ask? Make those questions your headings and answer them directly. In the first sentence. Not buried in paragraph 5.
2. Be Bold, Be Honest
Instead of "our product is the best," try: "Our product is strong at X but weaker than Z alternative at Y." AI rewards this honesty because it's useful to the user.
3. Create Quotable Blocks
Look at AI answers — they always quote short, clear, structured sentences. Use these formats in your content:
- Numbered lists ("Do this in 3 steps")
- Comparison tables
- FAQ format (Question → honest answer)
- Bold summary sentences
4. Talk Like an Expert, Not a Salesperson
In the SEO era, everyone wrote in sales language. In the GEO era, you need to write in expert language. The difference:
- Salesperson: "Our product is the best on the market!"
- Expert: "If you have this type of need, this solution makes sense. If your budget doesn't stretch that far, consider this alternative."
AI recommends experts. It skips salespeople.
5-Minute GEO Checklist
- Does your site answer the 10 most common questions your customers ask?
- Do answers start in the first sentence or after 3 paragraphs of intro?
- Do you ever name competitors and compare yourself to them?
- Are your prices clearly displayed on your website?
- Do you use lists, tables, and FAQ formats in your content?
If you answered "no" to most of these — congratulations, it's time to start your GEO strategy.
